well the forums are a good place to get very good advices about flash programing and artwork
besides I've been judging many flashes for a while and to get blammed here it has to be anoying and have a very bad drawing and you don't do none of these two
I've taken a look in your chess match movie and I thought I had a decent animation but it lacked a backround story and the details of the moves, I mean it'd be more cool if we actualy see the moves on the chessboard instead of seeing them just picking the pieces but I know it would be harder to do and make it longer and heavier, but if you want to excell your skills that is not a problem but don't worry if you ask people to help there is aways someone to help (I'm doing it myself ain't I) and bu taking a look at your work you are not exactily a flash noob you can be ranked as a good one in my opinion (I've seen what a real flash noob is), just remember keep your mind open and don't be afraid to search help.
and maybe you can try to improve your animation by seeking a more fluid animation stlye(nothing wrong with your style it is just an advice) just take a look on the work of these artists (by fluid animation see their characters move and you will understand)
Thanxfor the advice. For one of the links, doin't worry I watched many gory stuff on newgrounds that I'm immune to it. I'll keep my mind open from what I can do.
